Abaco Systems/VMIC VMIVME-2210 provides users with 64 One Form C (SPDT) contacts through two 96-pin DIN connectors. These relays are magnetic latching type, which means that once the contact is set, it will remain set (even if the power is disconnected from the relay) until it is reset. All three contact points are led out through connectors. They are the N.O. (normally open), N.C. (normally closed), and common contact points. N.O. and Common can be used to create A type A contact, while NC and Common can be used as a type B contact. Normally open contacts are located on row A of the connector, and common contacts are located on row C of the connector, as shown in Figure 1. This arrangement allows 64 core cables to be used for type A switches.
The VMIVME-2210 is equipped with a bipolar relay, but only one pole is drawn out to the user. The other pole is used by built-in test (BIT) logic. The status of the control data register or NC pole is read during board read access. The control register is located at the same address as the relay. This allows users to monitor the status of user contacts and control registers. Since the reader and user poles are controlled by the same coil, the BIT can pass through the N.C of the second pole. Contacts Monitor the user's contacts.
The N.C. contact provides logical contacts for the logical contacts that write to the data register. This provides positive data feedback from the touch BIT logic. When logic 1 writes to the control register, it activates the relay, which causes normally open contacts to close and normally closed contacts to break. When the contact BIT logic is read, the logical BIT is returned.
The control data register is also monitored because the relay takes a long time (up to 7 ms) to change its contacts. The board's VMEbus access performed so fast that the relays appeared to malfunction, leading to false conclusions. To prevent this, the user can check the status of the data register instead of waiting for the contact of the relay to close.
