Parking problems are common in big cities. The problem is not limited to Beijing and Shanghai, but worldwide. The root of the problem is lack of parking space. But now the Germans have developed a system to help prospective drivers find parking spaces quickly. In the future, drivers will be able to tell if there is a parking space nearby and pinpoint its location by entering the destination on a smartphone or navigation device. Lack of parking space has many adverse consequences, such as emissions and particulate matter, noise, and make the driver feel depressed, physically and mentally exhausted. Markus is the director of the Siemens Mobility's Smart Parking Monitoring System Development Program, "In general, about 30 percent of the traffic is looking for a parking space, " he said. "If we want to solve parking problems in major cities around the world in the future, it's not enough to build new parking lots and promote cycling. " Passenger traffic in Germany increased 1.4 percent in 2014 from 2013; it will increase another 1 percent in 2015, according to the Federal Ministry of Transport and digital infrastructure. The solution, called a "parking space management system, " integrates sensors into street lights or into buildings to continuously monitor parking lots around the city, and send parking space occupancy to the software system. The traffic authorities will collect this information and forward it to the application operator in real time. That way, drivers on every road will know where a parking space is available through terminals such as a smartphone, tablet computer or on-board navigation. The use of sensors to monitor streets and record the use of parking spaces is not new. A pilot project in London's Westminster district, for example, is testing 3,000 ground-based sensors. One troublesome problem was that the sensors, embedded in the asphalt, could only record whether something was above it and could not measure the size or location of the vehicle. And most sensors stop sending measurements when it snows or when ground sensors are dusted.
